The remarkable Maine Coon—are they truly that big? Absolutely! The size of a Maine Coon is indeed impressive, and they hold the title as the largest domesticated cat breed. That said, some photos you see online use angles that make Maine Coons appear .
Over the years, I’ve welcomed more than 75 Maine Coon cats and kittens into my home and cattery, giving me extensive, hands-on experience with this remarkable breed.
When we first brought Maine Coons into our family, one of our biggest questions was just how large they truly grow.
In the photo, my 10-year-old child is holding our Maine Coon male, Bruno, who was 2 years old at the time.
At that age, Bruno measured 38 inches from nose to tail tip and weighed approximately 25 pounds.
Over the past year, Bruno went through an impressive growth spurt, increasing his length and weight by 27%.
Now 3.5 years old, Bruno dominates our home with his towering size and presence.
A Maine Coon’s size always includes its long, flowing tail, which plays a major role in overall length.
According to The International Cat Association (TICA), when a Maine Coon’s tail stretches forward toward the head, it should reach the shoulder blades, making it about three-quarters the length of the body.
Bruno’s tail perfectly reflects this standard and highlights just how extraordinary Maine Coons can be.
While male Maine Coons like Bruno are notably large, their female counterparts are smaller but still above average in size compared to other domestic cats. My female Maine Coons typically measure around 33 inches in length and weigh about 18 pounds.
For a clearer comparison, here’s a standard chart outlining the size differences between male and female Maine Coons:
